Aluminium sheet frequently asked questions:

Aluminium sheets are suitable for various applications, including manufacturing, fabrication or general engineering. Common industries where aluminium sheet are used include:

  • Transport: BlueScope Distribution services Australia’s transport and automotive customers with quality aluminium sheet products, processing and solutions. We provide a range of aluminium products that our customers typically use as part of their own manufacturing or fabricating processes for vehicles such as trailers and tippers, rail and automotive.
  • Marine: Aluminium sheet is used to make a wide variety of products in the marine industry. It is particularly effective for end-use applications in this sector as it is light-weight, has high corrosion resistance in marine environments and has excellent strength to weight ratio while being easy to fabricate.
  • Leisure vehicles: Aluminium sheet is light weight and is commonly used to build fuel tanks, ute and truck canopies, camper trailers and manufacture caravan chassis and subframe. Aluminium can handle harsh weather conditions, making it a durable and long-lasting material.
  • Partition and privacy screening: Aluminium sheets are commonly used for partition and privacy screenings. This is due to aluminium’s durability, where it’s not prone to bending or breaking easily.
  • Façade panels: Aluminium sheet is used in construction as façade panelling due to aluminium being a non-combustible material. It has great thermal conductivity and offers excellent corrosion resistance. Aluminium sheet does not rust when it has undergone an anodising process, and is one of the only metals ideal for routing. Other manufacturing techniques include turret punching and laser profiling.
  • Building systems and sun control: Due to its thermal conductivity, high strength and light weight, aluminium is used in building systems, including sun control as solid aluminium does not combust.
  • Fixings and brackets: Aluminium sheets are commonly used to manufacture fixings and brackets due to high corrosion resistance and durability.
  • Electrical boxes and housing: As aluminium sheet has good electrical conductivity it’s commonly used to manufacture electrical enclosures. Aluminium also has a high resistance to corrosion, making it ideal for exposure to weather and harsh environments.
  • Aquaculture and water management: BlueScope Distribution has strategic stockholding of aluminium sheet, required by the aquaculture and water management industry. Aluminium sheet products are used in the fabrication of components for irrigation tubes, water gates, metering & flow control, channels, canals & culverts, dams &barrier controls, tanks and vessels, well/bore linings, flow measuring weirs, water treatment plants and flood mitigation.

BlueScope Distribution provides a wide range of products to businesses operating in the construction sector.

Our aluminium products for the construction sector are typically used in the following areas:

  • Routed façade panels (router cut, turret punched, profiling)
  • Flashings
  • Privacy and partition screening
  • Fixings and brackets

While steel is known to be stronger than aluminium based on pure strength, aluminium sheets have properties that make them more suitable than steel for certain applications.

Many aluminium grades are as strong as steel. In addition, thinner gauge aluminium sheets are light weight, resistant to corrosion, durable and malleable, making them appropriate for a range of applications.

Aluminium sheets are high in demand across various industries in Australia. They are available in different grades to suit a range of industrial applications.

  • Grade 3003 H14 sheet: This type of sheet can be used across various industries such as facade, sun control, food and chemical processes, oil & gas, automotive and for transport applications.
  • Grade 3004 H34 sheet: Similar to Grade 3003, it can be used for a range of applications that include garage doors, signage, tanks and façade panelling.
  • Grade 5005 H34 sheet & coil: This type of sheet can be used for a range of sheet metal fabrication and manufactured applications.
  • Grade 5052 H32 sheet & coil: This type of sheet can be used for a wide range of manufacturing or fabrication processes being 30% stronger than 5005 H34.
  • Grade 5052 H38/ 5251 H38 sheet & coil: This sheet grade is widely preferred across rigid sheet metal work and for road signage.
  • Grade 5083 H321 / DNV H321 sheet: This sheet grade is a common choice to construct marine and transport parts such as components or bodies.

Aluminium sheets are a cost effective option for fabrication being a ratio of 1:3 in weight compared to steel. They are 1:2.5 of the price of steel, with the benefit that aluminium is corrosion resistant, highly malleable, and requires minimal effort to fabricate.

Aluminium sheets are used across various industries in Australia, requiring a variety of sheet sizes for many end-use applications. At BlueScope Distribution, we stock most standard sheet sizes (see below); and offer DNV certified products up to 2200mm wide and 11800mm in length. Our team also have the processing capability to cut and supply aluminium sheet products into your desired shape and size. We have shearing equipment which enables us to turn aluminium coil into custom size aluminium sheets to ease our customers manufacturing processes.

Standard aluminium sheet sizes:

  • 1200mm x 2400mm
  • 1200mm x 6000mm
  • 1500mm x 3000mm
  • 1500mm x 6000mm

Custom sizes and shapes also available up to 2200mm wide and 11800mm in length.
