REDCOR® steel from BlueScope Distribution

Our customers enjoy the ease and convenience of sourcing their REDCOR® weathering steel and other associated products under one roof. BlueScope Distribution offers a wide range of high quality, locally made Australian steel plate products, including coil plate, laser plate, boiler plate and pattern plate. Backed by expert technical support and JIT (Just In Time) flexible lead times, we aim to provide continuity of supply to help streamline your business operations. REDCOR® steel products come in two categories: structural grade for applications such as bridges, and an architectural grade used in walling and for architectural features in building.

Our BlueScope Distribution team is experienced in helping customers to access the range of REDCOR® steel products in coil, plate and coil plate form.

REDCOR® steel is made by BlueScope and is a high-strength steel designed to develop a stable oxide layer on the surface. This oxidisation is known as a patina. When used in the correct environment, the patina enhances the corrosion resistance of the steel compared to conventional structural steels, allowing the product to effectively ‘weather’ in a natural way. Weathering steel has been a popular choice used in railway coal wagons, bridges, facades and many architectural features, such as sculptures and landscaping.

REDCOR® steel range

  • Heavy engineering structural elements such as bridges & bridge girders
  • Towers
  • Walls
  • Heavy sculptures
  • Frames
  • Circular hollow section constructions
  • Railway rolling stock
  • Non-structural architectural applications such as solid façades and walls
  • Perforated screens
  • Light sculptures
  • Landscaping features
  • Fences
  • Signage
  • Noise wall barriers

In addition to our REDCOR® weathering steel product options, your specialist team can also assist with TRU-SPEC® steel, XLERPLATE® steel and BISALLOY® steel plate products. We have steel plate products including mild steel, laser plate, boiler plate, quenched and tempered steel plate and weathering steel plate. We also have a wide range of steel plate processing options to suit.

Our customers are found in many industries, demonstrating the diverse applications for REDCOR® steel products:

Industries Served:

  • Infrastructure
  • Engineering and Construction
  • General Manufacturing
  • Residential and Commercial Building
  • Rail & Transport

With two chemistry types available, REDCOR® steel is available with a product grade with an “A” suffix, and a product grade with a “B” suffix.?

Type “A” is manufactured with a higher Phosphorous content to improve weathering resistance for light gauge plate and is typically used in facades and architectural applications.? The “B” suffix material is made with lower Phosphorous levels in order to improve the weldability of the steel for structural applications such as bridges.

Using REDCOR® steel in architectural applications can create even more opportunities for creativity and flexible design, such as perforation to allow different patterns to be produced. The organic way the colour develops over time will allow for an attractive visual feature.

A summary of the weathering steel available include:

Brand  Grade  Thick (mm)  Width (mm)  Length (m)
REDCOR® steel  CW300A  0.7 – 2  1155-1250
HW350A (coil plate)  3 – 10  1155-1250  4-12
HW350A (coil)  3 – 10  1155-1250

With enhanced corrosion resistance, the use of REDCOR® steel may reduce the need to use additional paint systems often needed with other structural steel products. This can help reduce the initial fabrication costs, as well as maintenance of the structure surface over time.

A summary of the weathering steels available for structural applications include:

Brand  Grade  Thick (mm)  Width (mm)  Length (m)
REDCOR® steel  WR350B  10-80  1600-3000  4-18

Further details regarding the formation of the patina and the correct use of REDCOR® steel are available in BlueScope’s Technical Bulletin No.26.

REDCOR® weathering steel applications

REDCOR® steel products are used for a variety of applications in segments like infrastructure, transport, steel fabrication and architecture. Some typical end uses include components, structural fabrication, bridges and infrastructure, walling and facades, and transport.
