BlueScope Distribution offers a broad, comprehensive range of rectangular hollow sections (RHS) in dimensions from 50 mm x 20 mm to 400 mm x 300 mm. Square section RHS varies from 20 mm x 20 mm to 400 mm x 400 mm.
RHS steel is used for many fabrication and construction purposes. It is also popular for many different structural and mechanical applications and can be used for anything from load-bearing frames to furniture.
The flat surfaces of RHS steel make it considerably more economical for fabrication and joining than circular hollow sections (CHS) that have to be profile cut. Instead, RHS steel simply has to be straight cut. Also, minimal edge preparation is required for joining and welding RHS.
Like CHS, RHS steel has lovely clean lines and can be used for aesthetically pleasing architectural elements. At the same time, it is highly functional and external environmental effects are minimal.
All BlueScope RHS steel complies with the Australian standard for RHS steel.
Australian Standard for RHS Steel
AS/NZS 1163-2016: Cold-formed structural steel hollow sections specify requirements for “the production and supply of cold-formed, electric resistance-welded, steel hollow sections used for structural purposes.”
It includes three strength-grades suitable for welding, and all grades are also suitable for fastening as specified in several other Australian standards.
AS/NZS 1163 specify requirements for “longitudinal welded cold-formed steel hollow sections” that are utilized for both general and structural engineering applications. They relate to CHS, square hollow sections (SHS), and RHS steel, and cold-rolled as well as annealed coil with hot-rolled coil for steel feed are included in the standard.
RHS Steel from BlueScope Distribution
Both square hollow sections and rectangular hollow sections steel from BlueScope are available in either Grade C350L0 and/or Grade C450L0.
In addition, some sections are available painted and/or pre-galvanised.
The range of square and rectangular hollow sections varies in thickness from 1.6 mm to 16 mm, and the sections are colour-coded according to thickness:
Generally, the smaller the dimensions, the thinner the metal wall can be. For example:
Minimal 20 mm x 20 mm is available in 1.6 mm and 2 mm thicknesses.
25 mm x 25 mm, 30 mm x 30 mm, 35 mm x 35 mm, 50 mm x 20 mm, and 50 mm x 25 mm RHS is available 1.6 mm, 2 mm, 2.5 mm, and 3 mm thick. The 50 mm x 35 mm thickness is available in GRD 350 painted, and all except the 3 mm thickness can be GRD 350 pre-galvanised.
65 mm x 35 mm isn’t available in a 1.6 mm thickness. It may be 2 mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm, or 4 mm thick. All except the 4 mm thickness may be GRD 350 painted.
75 mm x 25 mm is available in a 1.6 mm thickness as well as 2 mm and 2.5 mm. It may be GRD 350 painted.
76 mm x 38 mm may be 2.5 mm, 3 mm, or 4 mm thick.
40 mm x 40 mm is available in the same thickness as 25 mm x 25 mm plus it may also be 4 mm thick.
50 mm x 50 mm, 65 mm x 65 mm, and 75 mm x 50 mm RHS may be the same thicknesses as 40 mm x 40 mm as well as 5 mm and 6 mm. The rectangular profile is available in GRD 350 painted if it is 3 mm thick or less.
100 mm x 50 mm is available in the same thicknesses as 50 mm x 50 mm as well as 3.5 mm.
75 mm x 75 mm is not available with a 1.6 mm thickness but it is available in all the other thickness indicated for 50 mm x 50 mm. In addition, it may be 3.5 mm thick.
The choice for 89 mm x 89 mm is not as big – only 2 mm, 3.5 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm.
There is even less choice for 90 mm x 90 mm – 2 mm and 2.5 mm, and it is only available with a DuraGal® finish.
100 mm x 100 mm square section RHS steel has the widest choice of thickness options: 2 mm, 2.5 mm. 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 9 mm, and 10 mm.
150 mm x 50 mm is manufactured in the same thicknesses as 100 mm x 100 mm except for 8 mm, 9 mm, and 10 mm.
102 mm x 76 mm RHS is either 3.5 mm, 5 mm, or 6 mm thick.
125 mm x 75 mm is available in thicknesses of 2 mm, 2.5 mm, 3 mm, 4 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm.
127 mm x 51 mm may be 3.5 mm, 5 mm, or 6 mm thick.
The thinnest option for 125 mm x 125 mm, 150 mm x 100 mm, and 200 mm x 100 mm is 4 mm. These are also available in thickness of 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 9 mm, and 10 mm.
150 mm x 150 mm is available in all of the above except for 4 mm.
152 mm x 76 mm RHS is only available 5 mm or 6 mm thick.
200 mm x 200 mm and 250 mm x 150 mm are available in thicknesses of 5 mm, 6 mm, 8 mm, 9 mm, 10 mm, 12.5 mm, and 16 mm, but those 10 mm or thicker are supplied in 12 m lengths only.
250 mm x 250 mm are available in the same thicknesses as 200 mm x 200 mm except for 5 mm. The larger 300 mm x 200 mm and 350 mm x 250 mm profiles are available in all these thicknesses except for 9 mm.
