BlueScope Distribution strengthens steel distribution capability in North Queensland with new Plasma Beamline steel processing.

BlueScope Distribution has reinforced its commitment to North Queensland steel product and processing supply with the introduction of a new Plasma Beamline, expanding advanced steel processing capability across Townsville, Gladstone, Mt Isa and surrounding regions.

The investment represents a significant step forward in delivering a more complete, localised steel processing solution for customers, with the new beamline providing precise four-sided steel processing across a wide range of structural steel profiles, including beams, columns and hollow sections.

According to Grant Hodshon, Branch Manager – Townsville, the decision to introduce the technology was grounded in both current demand and future regional growth.

“This investment in the North Queensland beamline reflects our commitment to strengthening regional capability and aligning with the evolving needs of our customers,” he said. “It enables us to address key supply and processing gaps while delivering a more comprehensive service offering.”

The system incorporates advanced capabilities such as bevelling for weld preparation, coping, notching, slots, mitres and complex branch cutting—supporting a high level of precision and flexibility for project-driven work.

Further enhancing its performance, the beamline features True Hole™ technology to produce clean, consistent holes with minimal taper, along with marking and etching functionality that ensures components are clearly identified and ready for seamless downstream fabrication or installation.

Grant noted that these technical advancements translate directly into tangible benefits for customers across the region.

“Customers will benefit from improved capability, faster turnaround times, greater flexibility and consistent product quality,” he said. “The new beamline enhances our ability to support project demand and help customers deliver with greater confidence and efficiency.”

By delivering pre-processed steel components, the new capability reduces reliance on additional handling and processing, helping streamline project timelines while improving overall build efficiency. This is particularly important across sectors such as construction, mining and infrastructure, where project certainty and scheduling are critical.
